Prevent Pet Theft!

Updated: Jun 21, 2019

Pet theft is on the rise. Here are 6 steps to make sure your dog stays safe and sound.

Your dog is more than a wagging tail and wet nose – they’re part of your family. And what wouldn’t you do to keep your family safe?

Unfortunately, dog theft is a growing problem across the United States and Europe. Thieves target “designer breeds” they can sell at top prices. But there are plenty of steps you can take to spare yourself and your family from the pain of losing your beloved pet.

1) Keep Watch Outside

Although you can’t keep eyes on your dog 24/7, at least stay within earshot whenever they are outside. Keep gates to your property locked, and regularly check for potential entry and exit points such as weak links in or holes under fencing. A thief may struggle to get into your back yard, but your dog may have little trouble squeezing under that rabbit hole and into the neighborhood where anyone could get a hold of them.

2) Microchip

Have your dog micro-chipped with their name and your contact information. Be sure to register the microchip with a service that alerts vets, shelters, and animal control in the event they go missing. Most veterinary clinics can take care of this for you.

3) Limit Car Time

Vehicles are easy targets for thieves. Even locked, your pet is vulnerable any time they are left alone in a car.

4) Recruit the Neighbors

Neighbors can be an invaluable resource in keeping pets safe. If anyone sees a familiar dog with an unfamiliar person, they can raise the alarm before it’s too late. Discuss pet safety in your Neighborhood Watch meetings. Host a monthly play-date for local pups at the park, or a dog-friendly barbecue where everyone can to get to know each other and their dogs. Sometimes it takes a village!

5) Take Photos

Make sure you have a recent photo of your dog authorities can use to identify them if need be. A recent photo could be the key for a shelter, vet clinic, groomer, or pet store to recognize a stolen animal.

6) Know Your Sitters

Make sure you have all the facts about anyone walking, sitting, or boarding your dog. Do they have references? What kind of reviews do they have? Is their property/facility secure and set up for pet safety? Do they advertise though any accredited platforms? Ask any questions you need to in order to find your dog the best care.
